Austria
Parliamentary elections were held in Austria, and for the first time in history neither of the country's two largest parties managed to attract more than 30 percent of voters. It was the far-right parties that benefited from the electorate's frustration.
Early elections are expected to be set for September after government collapse in Austria. Ruling centre-right People’s Party and Social Democratic party fell apart on Monday (July 7) when parties failed to agree on health care reform. The 1,5-year coalition had earlier had heated debates over taxes, education and EU policy.
Austria's opposition Social Democrats have won a surprise election victory, defeating Chancellor Wolfgang Schuessel's People's Party. With all but absentee ballots counted, the centre-left Social Democrats won 35.7% of the vote, narrowly beating the the People's Party at 34.2%.
