The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) Office in Yerevan was established in 1999. On 17 January 2001 Armenia became a member of the Council of Europe. The office is working closely with Armenian authorities in implementing the commitments undertaken by Armenia. In particular, the Office is involved in the process of reviewing current legislation to bring it in conformity with European and international standards.

Other priority areas include assistance in legislative reforms (environmental, media, electoral police, NGOs, civil society, Ombudsman), combating corruption, establishment of the Public Defender Institution (Ombudsman), implementing international conventions on economic/environmental security (Aarhus convention), human rights education, police/prison officials' training, trafficking in human beings, gender and youth issues and involvement of civil society on a large scale of activities.
