Conservative Leader Stephen Harper, Canada's next prime minister, pledged to work with all parties in the next Parliament after Canadians elected a Tory minority government Monday, ending a 12-year reign of Liberal rule.
Paul Martin's Liberal minority government was brought down on Nov. 28, 2005, after Jack Layton's New Democrats joined with Stephen Harper's Conservatives and Gilles Duceppe's Bloc Quebecois on a no-confidence vote in the House of Commons. That kicked off a 56-day campaign, interrupted by short breaks over the Christmas and New Year's weekends, leading up to a Jan. 23 voting day.
The local elections were held in Ontario, Quebec, Western Canada, Atlantic Canada and Alberta. The attendance was quite high, more than 42% decided to use their right to vote. Experts explaine this fact by parliament elections that will be conducted less than in a month on January, 23. The interest to politics has increased.
The opposition Conservative party holds a slight edge in Canada, according to a poll by Leger Marketing released by Sun Media. 34 per cent of respondents would vote for the Tories in this month’s federal election, while 32 per cent would support the governing Liberal party.
Canadians could make an unusual pilgrimage on Christmas Day – to an Elections Canada office where they could vote by special ballot in the Jan. 23 federal election. The returning officers headquarters in each of the 308 federal ridings were to open for four hours on Sunday, starting at noon local time.

Canadians are one step closer to a rare winter election as the opposition Conservatives tabled a motion of non-confidence on Thursday in the parliament, setting the stage for toppling the Liberal minority government led by Prime Minister Paul Martin.
Canada's three opposition parties are threatening to bring down the minority Liberal government unless it agrees to hold an early general election
Municipal elections took place in Quebec municipalities Sunday. Andree P. Boucher, 68, former mayor of Sainte-Foy, one of a dozen suburbs forced to amalgamate with Quebec City in 2001, was elected a new mayor of Quebec City. Voters turned out in 1,106 Quebec municipalities Sunday. Across the province, a total of 581 mayors and 4,092 councillors have been acclaimed to their positions.
The Canadian province of Quebec will be holding municipal elections in its municipalites on November 6, 2005. The elections are held every 4 years on the first Sunday in November...
